Investigation of the effects of the invasive algae Halimeda Incrassata in Cabrera

August 2021

A team of scientists from the Institute of Advanced Mediterranean Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC–UIB), led by Dr. Fiona Tomas, launched the research project INVAHLI aboard the Stenella. The project aims to control the tropical invasive alga Halimeda incrassata in Mediterranean waters and assess its impact on marine ecosystems.

The team collected samples and monitored the status of the algal invasion, gathering valuable information for future eradication efforts. This campaign is part of the INVAHLI project, funded by the Biodiversity Foundation (Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge), with the goal of analyzing the effects of the invasive alga on marine ecosystems and identifying effective solutions
