The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE Sailing Regatta: A Commitment to Sustainability

Presentation of the Sustainability Plan

The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE Sailing Regatta stood out for its innovative Sustainability Program, presented at the Real Club Náutico de Palma. This program included various initiatives designed to minimize the event’s environmental impact.

Measuring the Carbon Footprint

The calculation of the Carbon Footprint considers the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the setup, celebration, and dismantling of the regatta, from July 27 to August 3, 2024.

It takes into account direct emissions generated by the organization (Scope 1), indirect emissions associated with the import of electrical energy (Scope 2), and emissions beyond the organization’s control, such as transportation of attendees or sailors, among others (Scope 3).

Smart Net Zero Events

Our SMART NetZero software is a management platform that offers a 360º real-time view of the environmental impact generated during the event.

To ensure the event’s sustainability, we will conduct a rigorous calculation of the carbon footprint for Scopes 1, 2, and 3. Once these impacts are calculated and verified, emissions will be offset through local conservation projects. This approach aims to generate a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

The integrated blockchain technology guarantees the authenticity and reliability of the information related to the event, demonstrating your commitment to global decarbonization goals in a transparent manner.

Real-time measurements of various key environmental parameters related to decarbonization will be conducted. These parameters include the carbon footprint, water footprint, environmental footprint, consumption, and energy use.

Additionally, our system integrates reliable third-party data, such as specific meteorological information for the area of interest, air quality, and noise pollution levels.

Palma Bay Report

The report from the 40th Copa del Rey was a first approach to studying the impacts of human pressures on Palma Bay. It revealed a lack of monitoring, highlighting the urgent need to promote a social and scientific effort to establish an environmental monitoring network for the prevention, maintenance, and sanitation of Palma Bay, which would improve its management.

The report laid the groundwork for continuing the pioneering initiative that began with the scientific campaign during the 40th and 41st Copa del Rey, with the goal of collecting long-term data to understand how the bay’s waters are behaving and their relationship to human pressures.

Scientific Campaign for the Third Consecutive Year

For the third consecutive year, the solar and electric boat Stenella conducted the scientific campaign during the Copa del Rey, focused on environmental research through sample collection and the use of sensors and robotics to monitor Palma Bay.

Environmental Education and Awareness Days

The Love The Mediterranean (LTM) initiative connects public-private institutions, foundations, associations, and third-sector entities to create activities for children, youth, and the community at large, focusing on three main areas: Health, Literacy, and Outreach.

The proposed workshops offer RCNP and MAPFRE the opportunity to actively participate in the social actions that will take place during the 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE, allowing employees to contribute positively to the community and make a significant impact on society, especially by offering support to children and youth in vulnerable situations or in processes of reintegration or adaptation.

These initiatives aim not only to bring disadvantaged youth closer to the Copa del Rey regatta but also to equip them with knowledge, experiences, and opportunities for personal development.

Corporate Outings

The boats Stenella, Galaxie, and BlueCircle, equipped with technology and sensors for measurements, were used during the regatta to conduct corporate outings in the fields of science, sports, and corporate relations.

This edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE will feature a 100% electric catamaran, the BlueCircle, as an unparalleled platform not only to view and experience the regatta firsthand but also to showcase sustainability actions from a corporate awareness perspective, a commitment that should also extend to our value chain and be part of our message as organizers.

The Galaxie School Sailing Vessel is a 100% electric sailboat with a unique history of commitment and service to altruistic projects in professional training, social integration, sailing practice, nature conservation, and environmental education and awareness.

During the 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE, we will conduct workshops and outings aboard the Galaxie to bring the world of the sea and sports closer to the public.

Sustainability Corner

This year, we have created the “Love the Mediterranean” Corner, a space dedicated to the sea on the RCNP terrace. This corner offers informational, educational, and artistic material related to marine conservation and includes four permanent exhibitions: a biodiversity poster from the Marilles Foundation, "Objectives and Scientific Challenges" from Observadores del Mar, the Marine Fauna Exhibition by Vicent P. Tejos, the Biodiversity Corner from Palma Aquarium, the MARE (Expo de Cara al Mar), and CleanWave Movement with their “Fora Plàstics” and plastic-free movement stories.

Conclusion

The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE Sailing Regatta was not only a top-tier sporting event but also a model of sustainability. We hope this integrative and environmentally conscious approach will inspire other sporting events to follow suit.
